Felony Friday 038 - Why is the DEA Declaring War on Kratom?

September 23, 2016
00:0000:00

Check out the show notes page for this episode.

Introduction:

Today on the Felony Friday Show host John Odermatt is joined by a guest to discuss the DEA's announcement to ban the chemicals contained in kratom. For those not familiar with kratom, it is a plant from Southeast Asia that has become a popular herbal supplement in the U.S. and is used as a way to self-treat chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, and a number of other conditions. Today's guest shares how kratom has helped him deal with chronic back pain and helped him to avoid using opiates prescribed by a doctor to treat his pain.

My guest's story:

Jack Linton has been a friend of the Lions of Liberty for many years and he joined the show today to share a personal story about how the drug kratom has eased pain he's been saddled with since childhood. Jack is an entrepreneur, who owns and operates Philly Grown, which is a gourmet mushroom growing business. He works long days that often involve manual labor, so he doesn't have the luxury to slow down for back pain. Since childhood Jack has had to deal with chronic back pain caused by an issue with his vertebra. Jack has self-medicated using kratom and due to the DEA's decision to make kratom Schedule 1 he will need to find a new way to deal with his pain.

Felony Friday 037 - How the Drug Trade Landed a Successful Entrepreneur in Prison - Part 2

September 16, 2016
00:0000:00
Check out the show notes page for this episode of Felony Friday!

Introduction:

Today's episode of Felony Friday is the second installment of an interview I did with an entrepreneur who has landed in some serious legal trouble after getting involved in the illicit drug trade.  This episode is a little different than others due to the fact that my guest is awaiting sentencing for a drug conviction. His lawyer has advised that he does not disclose his full name on the show. For this reason, throughout the show I will refer to my guest by his first name only, Anwar.

Anwar's Story:

If you missed last week's show, please listen to part one of Anwar's story before proceeding to part 2. In part 1 Anwar shared the path he blazed as an entrepreneur in a diverse Chicago neighborhood. He talked about what fueled his desire and how he discovered the tool to create a successful business.

In part 2 Anwar shares the circumstances led him to turn to selling drugs to keep his business afloat. Anwar revisits an ill advised loan that he received from Lehman Brothers. He explains how his own inexperience and an aggressive agent from Lehman Brothers' created a perfect storm that led him to take on more debt than he could handle and essentially bankrupted his business. Anwar turned to the drug trade to get out from under the debt load he had accumulated, which ultimately resulted in the FBI knocking on his door.

However, Anwar still has a positive attitude today as he awaits sentencing. He's worked on several charities and has channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into creating programs that teach kids how to become legal entrepreneurs.

Felony Friday 036 - How the Drug Trade Landed a Successful Entrepreneur in Prison - Part 1

September 9, 2016
00:0000:00

Introduction:

Today's episode of Felony Friday has a little different layout. First, the show today is part one of a two part show. Second, due to the fact that this week's guest is awaiting sentencing for a drug conviction, his lawyer has advised that he does not disclose his full name on the show. For this reason, throughout the show I will refer to my guest by his first name only, Anwar.

Anwar's Story:

Anwar first ventured into entrepreneurship when he was nineteen-years-old and decided to start a DJ business with his brother. His DJ business started modestly out of his parent's basement, but over the next several years he refined his entrepreneurial skills while opening several businesses. His business ventures have included recording studios, cell phone stores, and art galleries.

During part one of his story Anwar shares how his father and uncle both influenced him in different ways and set him on a path towards entrepreneurship. This episode lays the ground work for part two, where Anwar will reveal the decisions he made that turned his life upside down and led to a drug conviction.

Coming up Next Week:

During part 2 of this interview Anwar will share the circumstances that ultimately led him to turn to selling drugs to keep his business afloat. Anwar shares how he was able to get a loan, that he never should have qualified for, that he used to purchase a building. He describes how his own inexperience and an aggressive agent from Lehman Brothers' created a perfect storm that led him to take on more debt than he could handle and essentially bankrupted his business. Anwar turned to the drug trade to get out from under the debt load he had accumulated, which ultimately resulted in the FBI knocking on his door.
