FF 115 - Freedom is the Answer to Addiction says Steven Slate
Friday Mar 16, 2018
Friday Mar 16, 2018
Today author Steven Slate joins the show to talk about addiction with Felony Friday host John Odermatt. Steven was drawn to study addiction as a result of his own struggles with drug abuse. Steven and John discuss a controversial book that Steven co-authored with Marc Sheeren and Michele Dunbar, The Freedom Model for Addictions: Escape the Treatment and Recovery Trap.
The book calls into questions many commonly held beliefs in regards to addiction. Some of the questions it asks are as follows:
- Is addiction a disease?
- Is treatment the only way to deal with it?
- When people say they don't need treatment, are they in denial?
- Is moderate consumption always off limits for people who have had problems?

FF 103 - Libertarian Principles Helped a Drug Dealer Turn his Life Around
Friday Dec 22, 2017
Friday Dec 22, 2017
On today's episode of Felony Friday, host John Odermatt is joined by Colin Kreiger. Colin is a member of the Lions of Liberty Pride (you can join here), but that's not the reason why he's on the show. The reason Colin was asked to share his story on Felony Friday is because he serves as a remarkable example for others that it's never too late to turn your life around. In fact, Colin credits the ideas of liberty for being a main catalyst in providing the blueprint and the motivation to turn his life around.
Colin has made some mistakes in his life and paid dearly for them. He was kicked out of his University's criminology program for getting caught with less than a gram of weed. Later, he was kicked out of college altogether for fighting and resisting arrest. Over the course of the next few years Colin sold and used drugs, until his life spiraled out of control, which culminated in an incident with police where gunfire was exchanged and he's very lucky to have not been killed. Ultimately, Colin served two years nine months in a level 4 max security prison.

Wednesday Oct 11, 2017
Wednesday Oct 11, 2017
In this week's Electric Libertyland, Brian observes the days-long silence from top Democrats on Harvey Weinstein's grope-gate scandal, talks about the United States embarrassing itself at the U.N. discussing death sentences for gays, looks at a Miami Dolphins coach Christopher Foerster being outed on social media as a drug user because "social justice," and examines the insane amount of corruption in Latin American and Caribbean countries' public services. On today's episode recent clemency recipient Ramona Brant joined the show to share her powerful story. In 1995, Ramona was sentenced to life in prison for a cocaine offense related to her then-boyfriend’s drug dealing. At her sentencing the judge said he was “shocked at the severity of the sentence,” BUT he had no legal discretion to sentence her to less time.
Ramona spent 20 years in prison, before finally receiving a commutation from President Obama in 2015, and was released to a halfway house in February 2016. In March 2016, Ramona met President Obama during a special lunch for commutation recipients, and participated in a White House briefing on clemency, where she shared her story. Ramona is now the PR Director of the CAN-DO Guardian Angel program that has paired over 40 Guardian Angels with approximately 50 clemency applicants.
